Getting Around by Tuk-Tuk: The Complete Sri Lanka Guide

The three-wheeled auto rickshaw — universally known here as the tuk-tuk — is the fundamental unit of Sri Lankan mobility. There are hundreds of thousands of them on the road and they will take you almost anywhere for a fare that is, by any international standard, remarkably reasonable. Understanding how to use them well makes travel here faster, cheaper, and considerably more enjoyable.

The most important thing to know: always agree on the fare before you get in, or make sure the meter is running. In the bigger cities, particularly Colombo, most tuk-tuks now use metered apps like PickMe or Uber, which take the negotiation out of short trips entirely and are almost always the best option. Outside the city, and for longer journeys, agree a price before you start. Ask a local what the approximate fare should be before you negotiate.

Finding a good tuk-tuk driver for a day is one of the better investments you can make in Sri Lanka. The drivers who know their area well can take you to places that no map app will suggest, negotiate entry on your behalf, advise on timing, and provide a running commentary on everything you pass. Ask your guesthouse or hotel to recommend a driver they trust, or ask the driver you use for a single trip whether they are available for a full day.

A note on the experience of being in a tuk-tuk: it is genuinely one of the pleasures of being in Sri Lanka. The wind through the open sides, the view at street level, the way the driver navigates gaps in traffic that look impossible from outside. The tuk-tuk does not insulate you from the country in the way an air-conditioned car does. It puts you into the current of it. In the heat of midday this is occasionally not ideal. At every other time, it is exactly right.
