Visas and Entry for Sri Lanka: What You Need to Know Before You Book

Most nationalities require a visa to enter Sri Lanka and the process for obtaining one is straightforward enough that it takes about ten minutes to complete online. The Electronic Travel Authorisation, known as the ETA, is the standard entry document for tourists and it is obtained through the official Sri Lanka immigration portal before you travel. Apply at least a week before departure to give yourself time if any issues arise.

The standard tourist ETA allows a stay of 30 days and can be extended once for an additional 30 days through the Department of Immigration offices in Colombo or through an authorised agent. Extensions are routinely granted for tourists with no issues and the process, while requiring some patience, is not complicated. Many people extend their visas while here. This is common and normal.

For longer stays, the options include the Resident Guest Visa which is available to retirees of a certain income level, the Business Visa for those with legitimate commercial reasons to be here, and the Student Visa for people enrolled in courses. Sri Lanka has been working on digital nomad visa frameworks but check current status before making plans around this as the regulations change. The Department of Immigration website has current information.

One important practical note: book your return or onward flight before you arrive, as immigration officers at the airport may ask for proof that you plan to leave. This is standard procedure in most countries and is not an indication of any particular concern. Show your onward booking, collect your stamp, and begin the business of being in Sri Lanka.
