Kitulgala: White Water, Jungle and the River That Has Everything

Kitulgala sits in the wet zone foothills three hours east of Colombo where the Kelani River runs cold and fast through some of the densest rainforest in the country. It is best known as the location where David Lean filmed The Bridge on the River Kwai in 1957, but what brings people here now is the river itself, which provides some of the best white water rafting in Asia.

The main rafting run on the Kelani covers about five kilometres of rapids ranging from grade two to grade four. The run takes around an hour depending on the water level, which varies significantly with season. The best conditions are from May to October when the monsoon keeps the river full and the rapids challenging. The guides here are experienced and safety-conscious and the river is demanding enough to be genuinely exciting without being reckless.

Beyond rafting: canyoning is available in the stream systems feeding the main river, where narrow gorges and waterfalls create natural slides and pools. Rock climbing on the granite faces above the river. Jungle trekking through the Sinharaja buffer zone forest where the biodiversity is extraordinary. The Kelani River itself has calm pool sections between the rapids that are among the finest wild swimming spots in the country.

Stay overnight rather than treating Kitulgala as a day trip from Colombo. The small eco-lodges on the river bank give you access to the forest at dawn when the birds are loudest and the mist is still on the water. This is a different Sri Lanka from the coast and the hill country: wilder, wetter, and less visited. It rewards the extra time.
