Paddle Boarding in Sri Lanka: The Best Spots on the Island

Stand-up paddle boarding has arrived in Sri Lanka and the conditions in several locations are genuinely ideal for it: calm lagoons, sheltered bays, flat river sections, and the early morning ocean when the sea is glassy before the wind picks up. The pace of paddle boarding suits Sri Lanka exactly. You move slowly enough to see things. You are close enough to the water to smell it.

The Koggala Lake and lagoon system near Galle is one of the finest paddle boarding locations on the island. A large, calm freshwater lake surrounded by mangroves, small islands, and the Buddhist temple on the island of Kataluwa. Early morning on Koggala Lake, with mist on the water and kingfishers working the edges, is a genuinely meditative experience. Boards are available for hire through several operators near the lake.

The lagoon behind Arugam Bay on the east coast is another excellent location, particularly in the afternoon when the wind at the bay itself picks up and the ocean becomes less suitable for beginners. The lagoon is flat and warm and crocodiles are present but tend to stay in the reed sections away from the main water. A local guide for the first session is sensible.

The Bentota River, the Madu River estuary near Balapitiya, and the sheltered bays at Weligama and Hiriketiya all provide good paddle boarding conditions in the right season. The equipment quality from the better hire operators is improving and the rates remain very reasonable. This is still an activity where Sri Lanka does not yet feel crowded or over-commercialised. Enjoy it while that remains true.
