Shopping in Sri Lanka: What Is Worth Buying and Where to Find It

Sri Lanka produces things of genuine quality and the shopping here, when you find the right places, is excellent. The trap is the tourist souvenir economy that surrounds every major site and beach, selling mass-produced elephants and tea boxes that bear no relation to what is actually extraordinary about what the country makes. Avoid this category entirely. Spend your money on things that were made here, by someone who knows what they are doing.
Ceylon tea bought at source is the first thing on any serious shopping list. Factory shops attached to estates in Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, and the mid-country sell fresh tea at fair prices. Buy whole leaf, buy several varieties, buy more than you think you need. A good tea in a proper pot changes the quality of morning significantly.

Batik from a serious designer in Galle Fort is worth the investment. The difference between a mass-produced batik tablecloth and a piece made by a trained textile artist using proper resist technique is the difference between a souvenir and an object. Paradise Road in Colombo also stocks beautifully curated Sri Lankan design objects, homeware, and clothing that makes excellent buying for people who care about what they own.
Ceylon sapphires, rubies, and other gemstones from the Ratnapura gem fields are an investment category for those who know what they are doing. The gem trade in Sri Lanka is long-established and the quality of stones available is extraordinary, but buying without knowledge is buying blind. If you want to buy a gemstone seriously, use a dealer certified by the National Gem and Jewellery Authority and ask to see the certification. The unguided gem purchase in Sri Lanka has disappointed many more people than it has delighted.
