The Best Sundowner Spots in Sri Lanka: Where to Be When the Light Drops

Sri Lanka does sundowners exceptionally well. The combination of a tropical sky that turns extraordinary colours in the thirty minutes before dark, a warm evening breeze, good cold drinks, and the particular satisfaction of a day well spent in a beautiful country produces a version of the end-of-day ritual that is very hard to replicate anywhere else. The right spot matters. Here are the ones worth seeking out.
In Colombo: the rooftop of The Kingsbury Hotel looks directly west over the Indian Ocean and the sunset here on a clear evening is the best view in the city. Upstairs at the Galle Face Hotel, one of the great colonial hotels of Asia, with the Galle Face Green below and the ocean beyond, is another institution. The Sky Lounge at various newer towers in Colombo 2 offers the city spread below in a way that makes you understand its scale.

In Galle Fort: the ramparts at the lighthouse end are the classic sundowner location. No drinks, no bar, just the stone of the old Dutch wall, the ocean on two sides, and the sky turning. Bring your own cold drinks from a shop in the Fort. Sit with your feet hanging over the edge. Watch the fishing boats come back in. This is the best free sundowner in Sri Lanka.
On the east coast at Arugam Bay: any of the bars and restaurants on the main beach road have chairs facing west across the bay. The surf is still going at this hour and the silhouettes of surfers against the orange water are the image that most people take home from the east coast. Order something cold, stay until the last light, and walk back along the beach in the dark. This is the east coast at its best and the sundowner is part of the reason.
