The New Surf Resort at Arugam Bay That Knows Exactly What It Is

Arugam Bay has a new surf-specific property that opened at the beginning of this east coast season and it has filled almost every night since. The concept is straightforward and well-executed: a small resort designed entirely around the rhythm of a surf trip. Wake up early, surf the point, eat a proper breakfast, rest in the afternoon heat, surf again, eat well, sleep. Repeat. The property has been designed to support exactly this pattern and everything about it reflects that focus.
The rooms are clean, well-ventilated, and positioned to catch the morning breeze that comes off the bay. The board storage is secure and organised. The outdoor rinse-off shower is hot when you want it and cold when you need it. The kitchen opens at 5:30am so that guests who want to hit the water at first light do not have to surf on empty stomachs. These are small decisions that make a large difference over the course of a week.

The surf coaching programme here is run by one of the most experienced instructors on the east coast, someone who has been reading the Arugam Bay point break for over fifteen years. The video analysis sessions in the evening, where guests watch footage of their own surfing with commentary, have become the most talked-about element of the programme. Seeing yourself surf is both humbling and extremely useful.
The food is better than you expect from a surf camp. The dinner menu changes daily and draws on the extraordinary fresh fish available from the bay, prepared by a cook who understands that surfers are hungry after a full day in the water and cooks accordingly. The portions are serious. The flavours are Sri Lankan. The meal is eaten communally and the conversation around the table at the end of a good day of surfing is exactly what travel is supposed to feel like.
